My Senior Prom

My clock showed seven, meaning the senior prom was just one hour away. I didn't have a dance partner arranged, but instead, I was just going to join some of my friends there, so that we could play cards, chess, and Yu-Gi-Oh! I was planning to go just the way I was, in a T-shirt, light jacket, and jeans. I stroked through my hair a couple of times with my comb, not caring much about the way I looked, for I knew that by the time I got there and took my hood off, a lot of static would have probably gathered up, and my hair would be sticking up all over the place.

So finally, at 7:45, my mom is prepared and ready to take me to my first ever prom or dance. I got there by 7:55, so I just walked on down to the cleared out cafeteria, and grabbed a seat at one of the tables pushed to the sides of the cafeteria to make room, which was furthest away from the disc jockey and all his equipment. I spread my arms out across the table and slouched there with my chin in my hands. I sat there staring at the clock, observing the others who had already arrived, and keeping a sharp lookout for my friends.

Finally, at last, at around 8:15, I see the first familiar face. It's Nyda. It doesn't take him long to recognize me as the person in the far distance flailing my arms around like a madman. He promptly comes over to me and asks, "Hey, wassup Yothann? How ya doin'?"

I respond, "Nothin' much, man. Hey, you here to duel me? Challenge the greatest chess master ever? Or to put up a pathetic fight against the best card games person ever? OR are you here to go dance with someone?"

Nyda, a little surprised, replied, "Of course not! I'm here to kick your @$$ at anything we play."

We continued to exchange pithy comebacks, until Gerg Lanaul, the true genius of chess, had sneaked up to us, and revealed himself by boasting, "Step aside juniors. AMATEURS. Make way for the pro. Let me show you the real skills and abilities of a true master of card and board games."

At that moment, I suddenly had the impulse that someone was staring at me, observing me. I stopped talking to Gerg and Nyda, and took a look around the room. It was dark, for the dancing had started, but I could still make out the outlines of everyone's faces and eyes. And just as suddenly as I gained the feeling I was being watched, I made contact with a pair of eyes. I enlarged my view to take in the whole person, and realized she was Tanujai Falonzo, and I had a crush on her. She smiled at me. I blushed and looked away, but when I had recovered and gathered the courage to look back up, she was still there, smiling at me. We just sat there looking at each other for a while, speechless for each other. After what seemed like eternity, she finally made a move, and started walking towards me.

I tuned back to my friends for a second there, realizing that both Gerg and Nyda, and Elax and Kram, who had just arrived, were starring at me with weird expressions on their faces. Kram asked, "What were you just doing? Did you go deaf for a second there? You look hypnotized. I was trying to tell you something. What were you looking at anyways?"

Nyda answered, "Ooh, ooh, I bet he's looking at Tanujai. Just look, she's staring right back at him!"

At that point, I got up from my seat and started walking into the crowd towards Tanujai Falonzo. Elax suggested, "Guys, why don't we just leave him alone. Let him do what he wants. Anyways, on the other hand, can we start playing some Yu-Gi-Oh! or chess or cards now?"

So upon that suggestion, my friends became involved in games, and forgot about me. Anyways, I had just met Tanujai in the midst of the crowd at that point. We just stared at each other speechlessly until I gathered up the courage to ask her, "Would you care for a dance?"

And so for the rest of the prom, we danced our hearts out, and when the time to leave came, we both wished this night would go on forever, though we both knew it wouldn't. Tanujai's mom had arrived, and Tanujai didn't want her mom to see her with me, so she said good bye and we parted. I went back to my friends, and saw that they were just cleaning up. When Elax noticed me, he replied, "Man, you are so lucky to have danced with your crush. I was watching you two some of the time and wished it were me there, dancing with my crush." So my friends and I left together, all of us having a blast tonight; a night we'd never forget.
